What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts screwed into the jawbone as an alternative to the missing teeth.

It contains 3 components.

  1. A Titanium implant screw takes up the place of the former tooth root.
  2. A Crown functions as the prosthesis that will imitate your lost tooth.
  3. An Abutment that serves as a connector between the titanium implant and the crown.

What are the steps involved in dental implant placement?

Multiple appointments across a number of weeks are required to replace a missing tooth with dental implants. It takes anywhere from 3 to 4 months to complete the entire restoration..

Primary assessment and preparation of the site

  • To start with, the doctor will examine your mouth thoroughly and do an overall health checkup.

Implant placement

  • Once the jaw bone is prepped and healed well, the doctor will again ensure you are ready for the implant placement.
The gums in the area of the missing teeth are cut open to uncover the bone. A hole is drilled into the jaw bone for the implant post to occupy.

Healing and Osseointegration

After the titanium post is positioned, it can take about 1-6 months for complete healing and bone growth according to your health. Titanium is bio-compatible which means it is not toxic to the human body. As weeks pass, the bone in the jaw grows around the implant. This process is termed osseointegration. It helps the implant to sit tightly in the jaw.

Abutment placement

  • Once the metal post is fused with the bone and the gums are healed, the next phase is to connect the abutment. After the abutment is connected, the gums are sutured around it. The healing for this procedure can take as little as 2 weeks if you are in better health.
The dentist will now take the impression of the jaw and select the shade for the new crown that closely matches with the adjacent natural teeth.

Crown placement

  • Once the crown is placed, a second person cannot differentiate between your natural teeth and the new implant crown, thanks to the absolute shade match.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

Here are a few reasons why dental implants serve as a reliable tooth replacement option:

  • Look and feel natural: Implant crowns do not look or feel like a fake tooth owing to their enhanced aesthetics.
  • Helps chew better: They can withstand forces better, so you can even chew harder.
  • Durable and steady: The bone around the implant grows and fuses with the implant making it a long-lasting solution. With proper osseointegration, they will also not budge when you’re talking or chewing.
  • Preserves jawbone: Placing the implant at the right time will inhibit bone loss and the migration of the teeth to fill the gaps.
  • Comfortable while speaking: You will be able to speak clearly without any speech impediment.

Who should not opt for dental implants?

Dental implants may not be suitable in cases such as:

  • Those who have poor gum tissue or advanced periodontitis.
  • People who are reluctant or unable to maintain good oral hygiene.
  • Certain underlying health conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or blood disorders.
  • Deleterious habits like smoking or consumption of alcohol.
  • Those who suffer from any chronic illness that interferes with the healing process.
  • A person who is still in their growing phase- adolescents and children.
  • Pregnant females and the very elderly age groups.
  • Those who are undergoing radiotherapy or have a compromised immune system.

What are the post-operative care instructions?

Care should be taken to follow all the post-operative instructions. We will schedule regular recall visits to check the healing process.
