Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure worldwide. It includes procedures such as removing impacted teeth, buried dental roots, or wisdom teeth. Although advancements in preventive and conservative dental care have lowered the necessity for extractions, they become necessary to alleviate pain, prevent infection, correct dental misalignments, and maintain overall oral health.
At Umbrella Aesthetics, we prioritize your comfort and safety throughout the procedure. Therefore, there is no need to be anxious about tooth extraction, whether simple or surgical.
Normal Dental Extraction
Our oral surgeon will recommend you to undergo dental extractions if you have:
- Advanced tooth decay where a filling is no longer feasible
- Decay that has extended deep within causing infection of the pulp
- Severe gum (periodontal) disease
- Fractured teeth beyond repair
- Retained tooth roots
- Impacted teeth (teeth embedded fully or partially within the gums and jawbone) that may cause issues
- Extra (Supernumerary) teeth
- For braces to create space
- Teeth that hinder the fit of dentures or implants
- Teeth that are in the way of a broken jaw
- Teeth affected by cysts or cancer
What can I expect during tooth removal?
Here are the steps involved in tooth removal at our center:
- First, our dentist will assess your mouth and teeth. During the consultation, you will be asked if you have any health-related issues or are on any medicine. Your medical history and oral assessment are quite helpful when deciding the most suitable treatment option.
- A simple removal of teeth involves numbing the area before gently removing the tooth.
- During surgical removal, a small incision is needed on the gum to reach the tooth embedded within the gums and bone.
- Pain and discomfort are effectively managed with local anesthesia or sedation, ensuring a pleasant experience.
- You may have some temporary discomfort which can be easily alleviated with pain medication.
Ultimately, tooth removal is a procedure with minimal risks, and our team of dental experts is committed to making the process as smooth and comfortable as possible for you.
Impacted Teeth Removal
An impacted tooth remains partially or completely covered by gum and bone for more than two years after its expected eruption time. It can happen if there is less space on the jaw or if there is any other issues like nutritional deficiencies, anemia, vitamin D deficiency, and genetic predisposition
Should I get my impacted teeth removed?
Impacted teeth may lead to complications like gum disease, cysts, or tumors. Patients often wonder whether impacted teeth should be extracted or monitored over time, and the decision depends on several factors. Only if you have discomfort extraction is recommended. However, if there are no symptoms, impacted teeth need to be monitored for at least two years.

Wisdom teeth removal
A wisdom tooth typically erupts as the last tooth in the mouth, often during the early or late twenties. They can contribute to gum problems and may need removal under specific circumstances.
Wisdom teeth are typically removed if they are causing any pain or discomfort or are likely to do so in the future. Reasons for extraction include pain, swelling, tooth decay, or impacted growth. The decision to extract is based on various factors, including potential impacts on adjacent teeth or existing dental treatments.
After extractions, watch for
- Swelling: Use ice packs for the first 24 hours and warm moist compresses thereafter if swelling persists beyond 48 hours
- Fever: A slight fever is normal within the first 48 hours. In case of persistent or high fever, you need to contact us.
- Dry socket: Watch for persistent throbbing pain in the jaw, which could indicate a dry socket. Contact us if this occurs.
It’s Normal If:
- There is a little bleeding. Don’t worry. It may happen sometimes. Just use some gauze and press firmly until it stops.
- The stitches in your mouth will either dissolve on their own or we’ll remove them when you come back for your next appointment.
- You might feel a bit uncomfortable, but that will resolve with the medicines we prescribe.
Do’ s & Dont’s after the extraction
Do’s | Dont’s |
Drink plenty of fluids | Expect your mouth to feel numb for a few hours (2-4 hours). Try not to accidentally bite or scratch your cheeks, lips, or tongue during this time |
On the first day, try to eat soft, cold foods. You can start eating regular food again the next day | Stick to drinking cool drinks without a straw |
You can brush your teeth like usual, just be gentle around where we did the surgery. | Avoid smoking or doing anything too exhausting |
After 24 hours, you can rinse gently with warm salt water after eating. | Avoid hard stuff that might get stuck in the area we worked in. |
Follow the instructions for any medicine or mouthwash we give. | Try not to poke or vigorously rinse around the surgical area |
